Fulbright-Hays DDRA

Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) Program

The Fulbright-Hays DDRA Program provides opportunities for ABD doctoral students in the field of modern foreign languages and area studies to conduct full-time dissertation research overseas for a period of 6-12 months. The program is designed to contribute to the development and improvement of the study of modern foreign languages and area studies in the United States. Funds support travel expenses to and from the residence of the fellow and the country or countries of research; maintenance and dependents(s) allowances based on the location of research for the fellow and his or her dependent(s); an allowance for research-related expenses overseas; and health and accident insurance premiums.

A student is eligible to receive a fellowship if they are:

  • A citizen, national, or permanent resident of the United States
  • A doctoral student in good standing who has been admitted to candidacy in a doctoral degree program in modern foreign languages and area studies
  • Planning a teaching career in the United States upon completion of their doctoral program, or planning to apply language skills (in world areas vital to US national security) and knowledge of these countries in the fields of government, international development, and various professions.
