Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) Program

Description

The Fulbright-Hays DDRA Program provides opportunities for ABD doctoral students in the field of modern foreign languages and area studies to conduct full-time dissertation research overseas for a period of 6-12 months. The program is designed to contribute to the development and improvement of the study of modern foreign languages and area studies in the United States. Funds support travel expenses to and from the residence of the fellow and the country or countries of research; maintenance and dependents(s) allowances based on the location of research for the fellow and his or her dependent(s); an allowance for research-related expenses overseas; and health and accident insurance premiums.

Eligibility

A student is eligible to receive a fellowship if they are:

  • A citizen, national, or permanent resident of the United States
  • A doctoral student in good standing who has been admitted to candidacy in a doctoral degree program in modern foreign languages and area studies
  • Planning a teaching career in the United States upon completion of their doctoral program, or planning to apply language skills (in world areas vital to US national security) and knowledge of these countries in the fields of government, international development, and various professions.

How to Apply

  1. Read the full RFP on the US Department of Education DDRA website to assess your eligibility.
  2. Work with your advisor and/or committee to write an application following the application instructions including the points and selection criteria. 
  3. Visit the G6 website to access the application guidelines and submission instructions.
  4. Upload your documents to the G6 site by the UO application deadline. The actual submission of your application will be done by the UO Project Director, Elly Vandegrift (ellyvan@uoregon.edu).
  5. Prepare the required narrative if the project involves Human Subjects Research and/or requires IRB approval and email to Elly Vandegrift by the UO’s application deadline. IRB approval is not needed at the time of application, though funding will not be released until it is approved. Please see the RFP for more information.
  6. Submit letters of recommendation and language evaluations by the UO application deadline. 
  7. The UO Project Director, will submit all completed materials in the G6 application site.

Tips and Assistance

The FY 2024 DDRA program pre-application Technical Assistance Webinar will be available to stream on IFLE’s YouTube channel on February 15, 2024. The webinar will cover a variety of topics, including DDRA program requirements, selection criteria, and frequently asked questions. In addition to the recording posted on February 15, there will also be the following sessions listen below. Please be sure to watch the prerecorded or live Technical Assistance Webinar prior to joining either Question and Answer session.
